Default 4 Guitar Comparison- Can you tell them apart?

UPDATE: Results in post #23 on page 2

2 Eastmans, a Larrivee and a Lowden walk into a bar...can you tell them apart?

I have my good friend's Lowden O35 (cedar/Rosewood) at my house for a few days and I figured I'd take the opportunity to do a quick ABCD with this phenomenal instrument and my personal 3:

Eastman E8OM-TC Torrified Sitka and East Indian rosewood
Eastman E2D-CD Cedar and Sapele Dreadnought
Larrivee OM-03 sitka and mahogany

I played the same piece on all 4 guitars. It's long, but it was fun to do! Honestly, I was surprised by how well my stable held up to "the big boy!" I'm grateful to be able to have tools such as these to use.

I recorded them with a par of Presonus PM2 mic running through my Focusrite Scarlett. No EQ, no reverb, just straight up. I ran through this one after another, so there was as little change as possible.

Can you pick them out?

I think the first is the Larrivee and the last the Lowden. Can’t tell the others.

Matt...my take away was how well they all sounded. Not sure I could distinquish one from the other but if I had to guess I say the Eastman's were 3 & 4? Probably dead wrong!

Cedar & sitka in the mix make it harder. I'd pick 2 and 4 as rosewood, 2 as the lowden, leaving a harder choice between the mahogany & sapele, I'll go with 3 as sapele and 1 mahogany.

Your mics are good enough that differences between all 4 are clear, I feel an sm81 might make these easier to distinguish.

Agreed, you sound fine on all 4 takes.

Nice playing as always Treenewt!

I hear a richness in #3 and I think that’s the Lowden. Here’s my guess on the order:

1. Larrivee OM
2. Eastman E8OM
3. Lowden
4. Eastman dread

My ears are with Barry on this one. Have no clue if it’s right but always fun to take a stab at it.
Best,
Jayne

I don't know which is which, but I like 3, followed by 4. Both seemed to have slightly better sustain, less of a muddly lower end, and crisper mids - BUT...this could just be how they were played. I would be pleasantly surprised if those were the Eastmans.

What is interesting—and great—about the demo is that, while the guitars definitely sound different from each other (although 3 and 4 are closest to each other to my ears), without seeing the guitars to potentially bias one’s assessment, it isn’t so easy to identify which guitar is which.
