Eatin' my words...or going crazy?!?!
Well, I've bashed the Expression System for a long time. But, last night I played a house party. I wanted to take my Cole Clark but I was wearing my Taylor tee shirt. And I just hated to not take my Taylor. (yes, I think I need therapy!)... So, I took my 710 with the 9 volt Es. (First of all let me say my 710 sounds better than any other Taylor I've played--acoustically..it's really a great guitar ) Plugged it in my acoustic amp and it sounded great. I love the plugged in sound of my Cole Clark but I don't really care for the finish, or the look of it. So today I'm really confused...and trying to swallow my ES system bashing words...oops...almost got choked!..anyone else loved the ES..then hated it...then loved it again...

I'm not sure we'll ever see the end of the "love it / hate it" relationship to the ES system. My take: if you find ways in which it works good, then use it & enjoy. If not, then move on to something more to your liking.
We have choices -- lots of choices -- which is always a good thing.

Engelmann sounds great
I had the same experience with my 710ce due to the Engelmann spruce EIR combo, but I dislike the looks of the Engelmann, so I'm thinking about ordering a sunburst, even though I'm not a sunburst fan either.

I'm old, and what that brings, is an appreciation of the acoustic guitar pickup systems which have come BEFORE the ES. Basically we played our acoustic guitars sitting in front of a microphone on a stand. Then, after the earth cooled, and the dinosaurs became extinct, they came up with various built-in pick-up systems for acoustic guitar. All of them limited and imperfect, including ES. All of them requiring significant EQ. What I like about the ES is it's esthetic transparency, it's resistance to feedback, and it's wide range of EQ. I suppose we could all return to the days of playing in front of a microphone, and sometimes we do while recording, but for many applications, especially amplfied live performances, the ES provides many obvious advantages over being glued to a mic. Love it or hate it, it's one of the realities of amplified acoustic guitar.

i always thought the ES sounded great when plugged in to am amp or preamp, but never directly to pa. then it pops like nobody's business. so inredible active. but thru an amp and you have some control, sounds great.

So far the best sound I've found with the ES is running it thru a Boss 7 band Bass EQ pedal. Plus, if needed it will boost the signal. You can really scoop the mids with that and it looses alot if not all of it's "metallic" sound.

The Expression System is the cat's meow if a player doesn't mind an electric-guitar-like quality to their amplified tone. It's also good at feedback resistance. The Expression System's amplified sound--IMHO--doesn't represent the acoustic tone of a Taylor guitar in any way. As a companion to some after-market onboard pickup source added to the guitar, such as a UST feeding a Fishman Aura Pedal, or an SBT, it can become part of something better.
Sadly, for me, the Expression System makes it easier to sell or trade-in a Taylor guitar for another guitar I'm GASing about. IMHO, the ES makes Taylor acoustic-electric guitars a top "expendible" candidate whenever they're in my collection. This is really sad because the acoustic tone of newer Taylors is superb and has finally come into its own! Regards, SpruceTop

The Expression System, IMHO, sounds best when in a Taylor dreadnought because the dreadnought's body style and the resident tweaking of its ES onboard preamp for dreadnought eq-ing yields the smoothest less electric-guitar-like tone of the Taylor body styles. I've noticed this when comparing the amplified tone of different body-styles including the GS. I thought the GS SHOULD sound the best when amplified, but it didn't because the ES preamp has been resident tweaked to take out some bass while leaving more of the mid-range in the signal with the result being noticeably more electric-guitar-like than a Taylor dreadnought's amplified tone. The ES in a Taylor dreadnought is as good as the Expression System's amplified tone gets given current ES design. Regards, SpruceTop

I decided I didn't care for the ES, plus it was an older AA system from 2005 (even though the guitar was NOS), so that would always leave me wondering whether to upgrade it to the 9V system. I knew I didn't care for AA system as-was in that guitar, anyway. So I decided to order basically a 614c from Jim. Adding 510's and subtracting the ES made the cost basically a wash, plus I get to decide on my own electronics at a later time. First things first, though, he's ordering me an NS64c, which I'll probably use to put in a Pure Classic. Not that the Matrix I in my NS34ce works that badly at all. Actually works much better than in my 514ce. |
