Bone pins in a Taylor 614?????yuk
Lately I've not been happy with my 614ce...especially plugged in...just after Christmas I installed bone pins in it. In the process of getting it ready to trade I took out the "expensive" pins and put the stock wooden pins back in..
Wa...La....it sounded much better....after abing it with other Taylor..(see other thread) i'm gonna keep it...Anyone else had an experience with Bone Pins that ended like this??

It's been my experience that bone, whether used on a saddle or bridge pins, does not always improve a guitar's sound. It might possibly depend upon the tonal characteristics of the wood of the guitar. For example, a bone nut and saddle enhanced the character of my cedar/walnut GA, but the same installation made my sitka/myrtle GA sound too brittle. (I switched back to Tusq, and I had the same experience on an Engelmann/mahogany guitar I used to own as well.)
One thing that has brought a consistent improvement to all my guitars is the use of water buffalo horn bridge pins. That has been a "home run" for every guitar where I installed them - greater presence than ebony, but not as brittle as bone, with increased volume and sustain.

Not only did my 614's tone, sutain, and overall "sound" improve . . . it also improved the rest of my acoustic collection when I replaced the plastic Tusq® saddles with bone.
Replaceing the bridge pins to bone improved things even more!

more saddles than pins, in this case...
i had a 2000 LOTF 414mace (sitka/maple GA cutaway electric)
that came with a bone saddle in it & i didn't care for it - put a Tusq saddle back in it & all was good i put Tusq bridge pins in a 2003 614ceL2 (engelmann top) to give it a little more "edge", brightness/definition i did replace a Tusq saddle in a ps14LTD (engelmann/maple) with a colosi saddle & with new PB uncoated strings - it really livened it up a good bit i agree - whether a change makes it "better" or not, it depends on the guitar

Hey LOFAPCO,
The previous owner of my 612c put in a FWI saddle. I'm not sure what it sounded like with the Tusq, but it sure sounds great with the FWI. Not brittle at all. Gary
