As others have suggested, look at some used guitar models to get more guitar for your money. Since you stated this would be a "beater", why not consider USED?????

I cant get a new S6 here for anywhere near that money. The Hummingbird and the two Sigmas fall well under budget but do get good write ups.
£180, solid top. Add the cost of a setup (if it even needs it), and you're under your max. Job done.

You can get a pretty decent guitar for that price. I believe it's best to try out a few guitars in that price range because some of them might just surprise you. The last time I was in a guitar store I was surprised at how some of the lower priced guitars sounded better than some of the more expensive guitars. Some of these guitar's prices seemed over inflated simply because they had a certain brand name on the guitar.

You probably have heard this before, but it really is a good idea to go try these guitars in person. You might be pleasantly surprised at how good some of these lower priced guitars can be.

Can you get your hands on them? If so play them and decide.

Scootch - there is a dealer about 60 miles away that has the Hummingbird and the Yamaha, but not the Sigmas. Totally appreciate that I need to play before buying

I have a Crafter D6N. Love the heck out of it. It's a pretty hardy guitar that plays well (after some setup), and stays in tune like nobody's business.
