Default I was bored and saw a James Taylor video

Someone put up a link to J.T. playing "Shower the People" in 1998 on a slow afternoon this week.

Very nice. I'd always wanted to learn that song, so I took a little time that afternoon and learned it. And what good is it to learn the song if you don't learn to add some tasteful personality and make it your own? Done.

And then of course there's always "Carolina in my Mind" so I'm going to have to work up that one as well.

Not a wasted afternoon after all...

Bob

PS. I keep remembering the interview with producer/engineer Val Garay who discussed the fact that J.T. simply couldn't comfortably play the guitar and then come back and sing the song - he had to play and sing at the same time. Kinda makes you look at his guitar work differently, huh?

Little is more soothing to me than listening to Mr. Taylor do what he does. Just after that is playing his songs. There's something very calming, for me, about his music.

Default James Taylor Chords Themselves

...are off the chain. When you add to that the finger picking he does, that amplifies it. And then when you add the singing--and not just singing, exceptionally accurate, nuanced singing--it's really phenomenal. He's pretty much in a class of one.

I can hardly pick up an acoustic without playing at least parts of one James Taylor song. I have had a JT book for many years that covered his first two albums and one or two more songs. It has handwritten lyrics in the back of it and some little bits of tab here and there. It has a short write up about his movie appearance - I think the title was "Black Top Road."
The past year I have tried to work up some songs from his mid-range catalog that I always wanted to play but never learned -- Mexico, Walking Man, Nobody But You -- and it has been nice to do.
On some of those occasions I fall into the YouTube rabbit hole, I can get in deep on older James Taylor videos, especially where he is playing his Gibson around the time of the Apple record and The Flying Machine. British TV recorded some neat things.
Have a great fourth!

Hearing a JT song makes me want to grab my guitar and play.

Yes. Saw him last week in Austin, and still fabulous. For some perfect July 4 music, check out 'Summer's Here."

That would be "two Lane Blacktop", circa 1971. Not a bad flick. Warren Beatty and Dennis Wilson (Beachboy's, I believe) are also in it.
