I have found that to be true... for the most part. I did finally settle on a medium gauge set by Elixir #11172 which has a gauge that I like better on my
12 string... which differed a bit from what everybody else is offering in a medium gauge 12 string set.
Unfortunately... as I started using them in the last year, Elixir informed me (in a customer service call) that they were discontinuing them.... ggrrrr...

D'addadrio sold their family business 'Darco' to Martin in 1969, then waited 5 years (non competition clause?) before opening a new string company "D'addadrio & Company".

WL Gore does apply (or supply anyway) the coating. The wire itself (and the winding of same) is from and by other sources (and Elixir people regard that info as proprietary).

Yes, but there's an assumption by many people that because someone either works for or has another connection to a company that whatever they say on the subject is going to be the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help them God.

But the reality is that in business a great deal of information is proprietary, and an Internet forum is the LAST place where a company rep is going to divulge that proprietary information. Instead they're going to give you information that's been approved for public dissemination.

As of early last year Elixir "strings" were made by several companies.

Given that they sound insanely better than D'Addarios on my guitars, I would be highly surprised if they were indeed just coated D'Addarios.

I think it's kind of interesting: frequent and often accurate leaks about the NSA and myriad other highly secretive government agencies flood the web, yet the question of who makes Elixir strings is still shrouded in mystery. Whoever is in charge of intellectual property at Gore is really good!

Darn straight ! Omerta is the code there. Anybody squeals there's nowhere they can hide they won't be found and dealt with.

One thing's for sure, there's someone behind the scenes, pulling the strings...

I really like Elixr strings!! Ok had to get that out of the way because I didn't want to appear off topic. Interesting side fact, the Mapes string company is in my hometown of Elizabethton, TN and you'd really be surprised at how small the building is considering the amount of product they produce. You could probably fit about two of them in an average Wal-Mart.

Elixir HD Lights have a .025 gauge "G" string that is not found in any other sets or brands that I've seen.

Default who makes Elixir strings?

Does it really matter? Virtually every single brand of VCR is made by just a couple of companies. Virtually every brand of microwave oven is made by just a couple of companies. Virtually every brand of room dehumidifier is make by just a couple of companies. They just stamp the appropriate brand name on each before putting them in the box and shipping. But each product is built to the engineering specs of the brand whose name is stamped on the product. Most garden tractors in the U.S. are manufactured by a company (the name escapes me just now) that builds each brand to the brand company's specs, and spray them the correct color of the brand, but they role out the same plant.

Elixir might have their own wire plant. Or maybe they job it out to D'addario, Ernie Ball....whoever makes guitar strings, but they are made to Elixir's specs.
