Tremelo Picking...
I learned Laurence Jubers song, "Still Warm" yesterday, all the way up to the part where he starts doing his tremelo picking... I havn't the slightest idea how to get my fingers up to that speed.
Do any of you have suggestions in mastery of this technique? I play with nails (about a mm longer than the top of my finger when viewing the nail from the palm side). Are there excercises that you know of that will help? Thanks, Devon

are you talking about the classical tremelo technique? p - a - m - i?
if so, my teacher had an exercise that I used to help smooth the tremelo out. I would count to 5 starting on the p stroke. Next time around 1 is on the a stroke, next time after that it's on the m stroke, etc. as with anything, start out slow and work up to speed.

Yes, exactly what I am talking about. In "Still Warm" LJ is playing a note on one of the other 5 strings and then hitting the high E (tuned down to D for DADGAD) 3, 32nd or 3, 64th notes. DOes that make sense?
I will have to post a link to the song later and perhaps a tab. Was that excercise just what you described in your post? If not, could you let me in on it I understand to start slow, but man this is difficult! I feel like having nails is almost making it harder. Thanks, Devon

Remember that the a and m fingers share a tendon and work together. When the i finger is moving to strike the string, the a and m are both moving away from the string (and vice-versa).
You really have to practice tremelo slowly, with a metronome, in order to get it working smoothly. You won't get that singing sustained note sound until you hit around 140 bpm. A good exercise is to use just a first position A minor chord, use the p to sound the A,D,G and B strings and a,m,i on the open high E. That way you don't have to worry about anything but the RH movements until you've got it down. |

There's a pretty good video that details tremelo technique at:
http://www.stringdancer.com/cgi-bin/...t=murdick&id=1 It's a hefty download, about 28 megs, but it's well done and shows the necessary motions done nice and slow. |

I'll begin sitting down with my metronome and start working with that Am excercise you suggested.
I tryed to download from that site, but it was members only... Guess I'll have to sign up Thanks for the info, Devon
