Default Recommendations please: 00 / 000 body size, short ~24.9 scale, 1.75 nut with woody da

Looking for a 00 or 000 body size, ~24.9 short scale, 1 3/4 nut width with a woody bluesy tone. Willing to spend up to $3k if I can find one that speaks to me.

I have played the following and looking for additional recommendations:

Martin 00-28, 00-18 and 000-18

Taylor 312, 322, AD22

Any pros / cons / favorites of the above that I have tried?

What else should I get my hands on to try?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I love the size, the sound, the playability and the looks of my 00-28. Since I bought it last year I find myself playing it more often than my other (mighty fine) guitars.

…for my tastes it’s hard to beat a Gibson L-1 or L-00 for that woody blues tone…they check all the boxes and they look the part too….

Waterloo WL-12. I just bought a used one under your budget limit. Loving it. The WL-S is also great.

Elijah,

This is in the ballpark of the 3 Taylor Grand Concerts you have tried.

I would suggest trying a Taylor 412e-R short scale Grand Concert. I have one and I love it, even though I usually favor larger body guitars. For me the key is in the short scale, which you requested, but also that the guitar is spruce over rosewood which produces a great sound. The lower bout is only 15" across, but it's larger lower bout body shape is almost as if it were a mini-jumbo, producing that sound. It also has the 1+3/4" nut you seek.

I string it the way it came, with my favorite string set, Elixir PB HD Lights, .013 - .053. This uses trebles of .013 and .017 to go a bit above a Light gauge set. I also fingerpick all my guitars with my nails and use this same HD set on almost all of my six string guitars. If you don't like Elixirs, you can just try your favorite brand of Lights with .013 and .017 treble strings instead of the .012 and .016 on the E and B treble strings respectively.

Don't know if they make them, but a 412-R without the 'e' for electronics might fit the bill too. Not all of my acoustics have electronics, but it's not their fault. They were just born that way, and I accept them as is, especially since I don't plug-in.

Note that my all-mahogany Taylor 512ce Grand Concert is not a short scale, so I will not recommend it based on your short scale only needs.

Don

Not sure about availability for the price but a Santa Cruz 1929-00 would be perfect. Not sure of the used prices these days

Me too. When I got my first and only 00 a few months ago (Webber 00 spruce/koa, short scale) I was shocked to find how different from my 000's it felt in my arms. And how supremely comfortable and playable it is. I am totally sold on that size. The Webber is now my daily player, to the dismay of my 000's from Huss and Dalton, Larrivee and Froggy Bottom.
I strongly recommend David Webber's guitars. He makes a great 00. They swing well above their price point. Not so easy to find these days since he has largely retired, if reports are to be believed. But they do come up from time to time.
Or this one: https://www.gbase.com/gear/froggy-bo...2-fret-00-1997 from Steve Kovacik. I bought my Webber from him. He is a fine luthier and a total gentleman to do business with. No reservations in recommending him.
Good luck with the search.
David

In addition to the usual offerings from Martin, Taylor, and Gibson, check out the Made-in-Oregon Breedlove Concertina models. Body size is in between 00 and 000, 12 fret, 25" scale, 1.75" nut, available with or without a cutaway. The trim levels are USA -> Oregon -> Frontier -> Premier -> Legacy -> Masterclass, but they're all built with the same hand-voicing and attention to detail.

You could probably also find a used Collings, Bourgeois, Santa Cruz, or similar 00 or 000 near the top of your price range.

I like some of the 00-18’s and 000-18’s i have encountered.

I am not much into Taylors at this point.

For closer to $4K, a used Collings might be within reach. Ive heard some Collings 00’s and even an 0 that I have really liked. I owned a C10-35 that was really nice (I sold it because my musical journey took me towards “prettier” songs, and because I often prefer rosewood guitars.

An H&D might be worth exploring. Haven’t heard or played anything other than H&D OM’s, but they were special. And a used one can be had for $3K.

Oh yeah…I forgot about Waterloos. Great guitars if you like the rough finish and their necks (I liked the finish on a Waterloo I tried, but the neck wasn’t right for me). Definitely a woody tone.

If you happen to be anywhere near Charlottesville, Va., there is a very attractive Weber 000 listed on Craigslist/Charlottesville in your price range. Don’t know the seller (or anyone there), but it could be worth an inquiry. I would buy it to try it out for a while, but I am just maxed on guitars.

Iris OG. 25" scale and can be had with a 1.75" Nut. Get the sunburst, and it will look like a blues machine too.

I second this suggestion. I was looking for a guitar with the same specs you are interested in, and I am really pleased with my Breedlove. Just remember to only search USA made Breedloves, as their imported lines are all 1 11/16 nut.
