I've not played a smaller body with Tasmanian Blackwood.
I have played a 718. I found it to,sound much like maple.
The 718e sounded much like the 618e. It was $300 more.
What a pretty guitar though.

I don't know it that helps.

Thanks, much appreciated, I think I'm going the Martin route until I can justify spending double. I could get the Taylor but I don't want to over extend myself when I wont be able to do the guitar justice for some time.

What's the price for that Martin? It's used right? That might be a really good deal. That model has a 1-3/4" nut which you might find real comfortable. It also has a very straightforward pickup if ever you want to start playing open mics.

If you can afford it, that's a real nice learning guitar!

800... I don't think its a smoking deal seeing how guitar center has them for 849... so I'm undecided at this point. Thoughts? I don't want to lose too much in the future if I decide to upgrade.

No affiliation...but did you go by Tejon Street Music and play some guitars? They are Taylor and Martin dealers and have some decent used models. They welcome you to try them with no pressure. Just stay away from the Collings section! I think that would help you get a little more focused on the direction you want to head. Good Luck!

I'm not sure how you could hear ANY guitar in the acoustic room at GC here in the Springs.

I have been there nice guys. I saw the collings section and didn't touch one of them. Can't afford to go down that rabbit hole.. [emoji3] they didn't have much in the used that piqued my interest....

Wait a minute, GC has a used OMCPA4 for $849, the new ones go for $1349. To be honest, I'd rather purchase a used guitar directly from a forum member than from GC. I've read at least 2 horror posts here in the past week about someone's bad experience with buying used from GC (i.e. sunken tops, major dings, etc.). If you've played that OMCPA4 for $800 and you like the feel of the neck, action, etc., chances are, it has already been setup by the previous owner and cared-for much better than a GC used guitar. I'm not saying all GC used guitars are horrible, but just be cautious. $800 is not a bad deal if that's the guitar you like.

Good luck, let us know what you end up with.

I got my 314ce for under your price point by buying used. If I decided I didn't like it for some reason, or just needed money and decided to sacrifice it, I doubt I'd lose any money moving it on.

But I doubt that will happen. It's a versatile, comfortable, excellent guitar that I love to play. If you want one, patiently look for a deal.

That Martin may be a great guitar, too. I wanted to like the one I tried, but preferred the Taylors and higher-end Martins I compared it to.

Default new guitar

You mentioned that you felt you were not skilled enough to really judge their potential. Here's a way around that: have the salesman play for you. That way, you get to hear it as the audience does and you get to hear how it sounds in more skilled hands.

I really want to like the Martin also, but the 314 is in the back of my mind.

A very good guitar! Can't go wrong with a 414. Good Luck! Hope you like it...

And I'll say it first...take some wire cutters with you! The antennas don't help the reception at all.
