Default I Broke My Hand Last Night

Yup. I broke my left hand. It's swelled up like a balloon. I was getting out of an Uber large cab pick-up truck last night when it delivered us to our home. I'm not sure what happened really. I'm guessing I wasn't thinking about the higher distance of the truck and didn't find the ground where I was expecting it. I went down hard. I have cuts on my hands and my face is scratched. Every thing on my hand works so I'm not sure if I'm going to the doctor or not. It's really sore and ballooned up. I can't close it all the way right now. So no guitar playing for me for awhile.

Hi there!

I'm sorry to hear this...and that you are in pain. PLEASE go and see your Doctor ASAP. You are a musician...you can tell them that...and that's why it's important to seek professional help. I hope you get better really soon!

How do you know it's broken if you haven't been to the doctor?

I fell summer before last, and sprained my wrist, or so I thought. Mind you, I work in an administrative capacity, for a hospital! But I thought I'd be brave and just buck up. My coworkers pleaded with me to go get it looked at. Finally, to shut them all up, I did. And found out I had a fracture. I got splinted for over a month. Had I not done that, it would have healed iproperly, and I wouldn't be able to easily turn my write up to fret notes on the guitar neck.

Go have it checked out!

If at all possible, Go. To. The. Doctor. There are a lot of small bones, tendons, and nerves in the hand. PT/OT may be necessary to avoid loss of feeling/range of motion. This is NOT the time to be macho.

Having had hand surgery last year from ignoring a broken hand, finger, and torn ligament I can tell you first...hand (forgive the pun) that you should have it looked at now. My hand surgeon said if I'd had mine looked at right away it would have been a simple fix instead of complicated surgery later on like I had.

Do yourself a favor and go see a good orthopedic that has a hand specialist.

Ditto. Go to the doctor. You want your hand to heal in the best way possible. There's a time to go to the doc. This is one of them. And I'm not a big "go to the doctor person."

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I'm not a physician, but I remember marveling at the human hand while I was in school. Even with all our latest advances in computer controlled robotics, to this day we cannot replicate everything your hand is able to do, when properly teamed with the rest of you. By all means, take good care of it, and it will take care of you. Don't and it won't!

Thanks everyone. You all are correct. You never know where you'll find smart guys :-) I went to the doctor, actually two doctors. I had x-rays and got four stitches. Traveled across town and went to the hand specialist. I have a couple of fractures. So I have a cast now and go back to see the doctors again next week. One to take out the stitches and the other to monitor my fractures. If things go correctly I won't need surgery. We'll see. It's amazing how one little fall can send your life a different direction. But this isn't anything compared with what some are experiencing. Thanks again.

Sorry for the injury. I'm with the go see a doc crowd. Music is a part of you life and a poorly healed injury could take it away.

Sorry to hear about it Jelly.

Six weeks you'll be back in and your chords will sound terrible and your finger tips will hurt. But you're gonna get lots of picking or strumming practice in these 6 weeks.

Was the vehicle one of these big diesel monsters that blows black exhaust at cyclists? Did time slow down for you at all as you were falling and allow you to consider how much it was going to hurt? Probably not or you would have tried to opt for landing on something that wouldn't affect your playing, say your knees or chest or face.

I fractured a metatarsal on my left hand last summer. It'll get better before you know it. One of these hiccups in life. There are a couple members here that are going through some tough situations that would be happy to trade ailments with you. Not as bad as you think.

Good luck Jelly. Peace man
