Default Recording, 50's style...

Here's a very entertaining video for any of you that might be interested in truly vintage-style equipment and the recording process:

Hey thanks for posting this Honestly the entertainment value pales in comparison to the informational/instructional value. So much of what he is saying are timeless pearls of wisdom , that still have total application in todays recording environments. Especially for those of in home studios with limited numbers of mics and recording channels . And even though most of us are not recording entire bands or combos at once many of the principles of getting the placement of mic to instrument of mouth to room etc. all before hitting the record button are still just as important . I am not to sure this shouldn't be a sticky for the recording forum.

For one example when he mentions the potential problems of going from one mic to two, that is totally relevant in any recording environment

The details about mic patterns and how it related to setting up the positions and locations of the musicians were the "entertaining" part for me. Also the details about the vintage equipment.
It must be nice to find an unused "New Old Stock" RCA 44 in it's original box!

To be clear I was not discounting the entertainment value, merely extolling the informational value of the principles and concepts he was relating.

Yes indeed and RCA 44 new in the Box what a find

My first recording job, 1979:

If you look closely you'll see the same gear behind me: a pair of Altec tube preamps, Ampeg AG352 1/4" tape deck at 15ips (see the white paper tape leader?), Gates tube mixing console with BIG rotary faders. I was recording with a pair of 1950s Neumann M49 microphones. In fact, everything in the chain was from the '50s. It was a great way to start in the biz. The acoustic absorbent on the walls was pegboard style.

And dig the Fogelberg beard, no?

Bob

I've still got the editing blocks, Chinagraph wax pencils, single-edged razor blades, boxes of splicing tape, and boxes of leader tape around and we still have our analog decks, though they are state of the art. Oh, and we have a pair of RCA BK-5 ribbons and an old Neumann U-47 we acquired with only eight hours on it. We did sell our EMT 240 Gold Foil reverb a while back, so we are all-digital on reverb these days.

That shot is a few years and pounds ago (I've dropped about forty pounds).

Bob
