A couple of suggestions, hopefully not duplicating - the late Dan Fogelberg and Gordon Lightfoot.

George, I'd like to second what Mandobart said about getting some more obvious crowd pleasers into your rep .
This is something I need to do myself anyway.
I am very fond of some great dirges and I play a lot of 'em at home.
But I really need to learn some more lively and less obscure stuff for open mics

Then that brings the question up.............what are some of the more popular & upbeat songs that play well to a crowd?

(unless we already went there and I missed it)

Maybe too early in the thread for a hijack Dan !

But "I'm a Believer" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" spring straight to mind .

Thanks for starting a fascinating thread. It's amazing to see such a wide variety of repertoires. My faves are old Folk, Folk Rock, Ballads and soft rock and country. Just a few:
Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin' - Gerry and the Pacemakers
Country Roads - John Denver (Bill Danoff & Taffy Nivert)
The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Grandma's Feather Bed - Traditional (John Denver)
Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn
In My Life - Lennon & McCartney
This Old Guitar - Denver
Your Song - Elton John
Yesterday - Paul McCartney
Sunshine on My Shoulders - Denver
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
He'd Rather be in Colorado - Denver, Danoff, Nivert
No Stranger to the Rain - Keith Whitley
Dust in the Wind - Kansas
Suicide is Painless - Johnny Mandel
The Wedding Song - Noel Paul Stookey
As Tears Go By - Mick Jagger & Keith Richards
Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet
Strong - Will Hoge

These are all great songs, former hits, well known and liked especially with the retirement home crowd. Chords and lyrics can be found on the internet, as well as Utube performances. Good Luck!

Red face

Oops - my bad on the thread hijack. I'll have to use the "fairly new to forum decorum" defense.

However - thanks HAPPYDAN for the Walking in Memphis suggestion. Always loved that song and never knew it transferred so well to guitar.

I just found a version on ????tube and it's pretty straight forward but sounds great!

Picking up on the Gordon Lightfoot suggestions, Carefree Highway might fit your criteria. The lyric is kind of sad, but it is a good up tempo strummer, too. Lot's of fun to play.
