Guitar Review - A Step Too Far?
Warning! The following video may be distressing to some - contains scenes of a perfectly good guitar being cut in half.
https://youtu.be/HHYOdsTD6Og So, what do you think? Is this taking the review process too far? Is there any real value in this destruction? Would you want to see more videos like it? Interested in your opinions. Regards, Clive. |

This is a guitar autopsy, rather than a simple review. It did reveal sloppiness on the bracing system construction. But if it had been a great looking (externally) and great sounding guitar, not many people would care about how it looks inside, where it cannot be seen.
It was interesting and appealed to my nerdy side, but unnecessary, and a waste of a good guitar.

Yep, I'd say that's a step too far.
Nothing you can learn by cutting a guitar in half that you couldn't learn by sticking a camera inside it. The key on the finish and liquid on the finish test would be pretty easily predicted based on what kind of finish it has... oh, it has poly, probably pretty tough and non-reactive. I guess some people are just visual learners, and might be impressed by seeing this stuff?

I like it. I think it's great for someone who just want to buy a guitar to know how it resists to abuse. I know some LP who would not have survived the drop on the concrete.

I don't drop my guitars on concrete, or scratch them with keys. While this might be helpful for people who regularly abuse their instruments, it's useless to me (and slightly offensive to watch).
Cutting the guitar in half seems ridiculous. There are cameras that could give you more than you want to know about the inside. I find none of this even slightly helpful for shopping for an instrument. It would be a good approach for the purchase of toys for a 3 year-old.

That was quite interesting, something I never quite thought of... "a guitar autopsy.." assuming it was dead that is....
any one else surprised that the neck survived the concrete floor? I was.

The whole "dropping it on the concrete floor" thing isn't even all that instructive. It might not survive a second fall, a different guitar from the same batch might fail the first time because it's a different piece of wood.

they're guitar builders, so I can see some value in them opening up guitars to get a closer look at the construction techniques/methods. If they're going to do that anyway, why not create a shocking new Youtube video series that creates a lot of buzz on forums and generates a lot more views for their channel?

After the dent test he said it was pretty incredible that it measured no dent. That says to me that the guitar has way to thick and or hard a finish on it to sound good
This is way over kill but kind of cool too. |

Saw Tommy Emmanuel and Andy McKee in concert late night. Left there wanting to cut all my guitars in half!

I don’t think that even after a year a ToneRite would open up a guitar like that.
What a waste of a perfectly good guitar. Agree that many of durability features that are praised would make a guitar undesirable to me (and probably many others here, unless one is looking for a truly “beater” guitar). |

I thought that review was AWESOME!!! Sticking a camera in there wouldn't give you the same perspective of seeing it, so I enjoyed seeing the bracing layout!
