He really seems to have been foundational with the American folk revival, and though he had collaborators and forbearers with that 1927 book and folk song collecting, his popularity and book sales helped bring a certain repertoire to the fore. Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger had other influences too, but Sandburg has to be a big one for them. Even their presentation was very much in the mode of Sandburg from what I can tell. And did you know that when Bob Dylan was writing those breakthrough poetic songs in 1964 and went on a famous cross-country jaunt that he asked to drive up Carl Sandburg's goat farm and meet the man? Reports are sketchy about what they said to each other.

I've written music and performed a bunch of Sandburg poems. Here's one I presented a couple of years ago:

My blog post and link to performance of Sandburg's Smoke and Steel

And he could help fix my car. Bonus!

Sierra Hull.

Kate Upton wants to learn to play too. We could practice together.

Somebody who would be fun to be around - Michael Chapdelaine. Someone who could teach....a retired university guitar prof - Michael Chapdelaine. Someone who could play guitar in any style - Michael Chapdelaine. Someone whose music would fill me with awe - Michael Chapdelaine. A downright good person - Michael Chapdelaine.

Would have to be a singer, as well as a player.

So maybe Vince Gill.

Although the Kate Beckinsale idea is very intriguing.

Lots of great posts and fun thread idea. My first thought was Mark Knopfler, I admire his guitar work and he seems like a genuinely nice guy who'd be a lot of fun to hang with.

Anybody consider Harry Chapin? Man that guy could tell a story/song.

I didn't see any mention of Tommy Emmanuel, though I might have missed his name. I think he is a guitarist who can play about anything and with anyone. He would certainly be on the top of my list, though I wouldn't shy away from many others. Plus he seems like a really nice fellow.

For me it would be Ed Gerhard for fingerstyle and overall performance/playing skills, and Mary Chapin Carpenter for folksinger fingerpicking and strumming while singing.
