I guess the simplest way to describe the difference is..

Martin go ""BOOM" with less high end treble.

Taylor go "BANG" with a brighter high end.

Hope this makes since.

There are a couple of stores in the Seattle area that carry Santa Cruz and Collings, some guitars I've not gotten my hands on, that I would love to play one of these days.

There are some great benefits to my living way out in the boondocks, but finding great guitar stores is not one of them.

Hey, I live in Santa Fe New Mexico. New Mexico has less than 2 million people. But I grew up in Washington DC, which has more than 2 million people if you cound Maryland and Virginia. So I hear you. We have one or two good places in Santa Fe, luckly, and then the next nearest places are in Denver or Phoenix, either is a good seven hour drive.

By George, I think you are on to something there!

Brainy scheme, that.

I see your humor, but and however it ain't subjective, the differences between the tonewood are very objective and tangible as I wrote earlier. Preference for one tonewood or another is completely subjective. Remember this folks, TONE IS NOT SUBJECTIVE! preference for tone, however, is subjective.

Ok, another way to look at it:

Mahogany has a smooth voice and nice hair. Rosewood has BALLS !!
