But yeah, if you must "cut through," Tele, bridge pickup, dimed deluxe reverb with the treble on 10. Or simply take a sharpened pencil and jab everyone in the front row right in the eardrum.

Dude, I laughed twice on this one. Having owned a Tele and a DR I know from personal experience that what you suggested will get the job done...or the pencil, either way.

I wouldn't call it moralizing. I'd call it the difference between sounding good and sounding loud.

Also, that Martin parlor isn't cutting through, it's occupying the space the dread isn't.

By the way, that's the coolest dang 7-11 commercial I've ever heard. Particularly like the Lalo Jimenez-ish accordion fills...

well, I took one of my Santys out today, to practice "smells like stairway to heaven",
a song that has some serious mojo.
The double 0 Santy has been a the service the other day, it plays like butter now.
The twangy sound from that hogtop double 0 can really cut through the mix,
it is quite a little cannon. The best I had so far.
It is no Banjo Killer though, with it's double 0 size, but like my other Santy,
it is a true tone monster and has sustain for days.
The bigger Santy has way more bass, but it is not as piano like as I would
love to, it has none of that Gibson thud though, fortunately.
I need a Froggy I believe.

Yeah, but did you notice the mids weren't "scooped", maybe they were "chimey" instead. I'll bet it has "punch"and "bell-like" trebles that "sparkle without harshness."

I'm having wa-a-y too much fun today.

Many of the terms being discussed may be a bit silly but they do convey a basic idea that helps me get some mental picture of the subject. Without them, we'd just be ... quiet? or boring?

But to add to the gripes: What about the ridiculous notion of "Acoustic Guitar"? Since the word 'acoustic' just means pertaining to the sense of hearing, or sound, why is an unamplified, wooden box any more acoustic than an electric guitar. Both make sounds. Both have 'acoustic' properties. The secondary meaning of 'acoustic', applied to an unamplified instrument of some sort, is just a meaning acquired by the same sort of folks who would call a guitar an 'axe', or a tone 'woody', or a specific action level 'like buttah'.

I propose a ban on the words Acoustic Guitar. But if I don't get my wish, I won't hold it against anybody.

Never really understood why 'cannon' was used in reference to guitars.
A cannon is big and heavy and it explodes then needs to be reloaded?
So in guitar terms that is equal to ...?
A huge , heavy guitar with little wheels to move it with that explodes just once when you strum it then needs a complete re-string?
Yeah ... I want me one of them.

'Pulled the trigger' ... whoa! So you shot a guitar?
Yes Bruce -gotta agree with you on those.

Pretty soon the descriptions will be equal to those used in wine tasting 😀

As the world progresses, so does language. "Acoustic guitar" is a retronym, certainly, but it helps with clarity and specificity. Besides, if someone's granting you wishes, don't waste 'em.

Maybe you guys can give a list of acceptable words to describe treble and bass and sustain and reverb etc. that will not irritate you rather than just listing all your dislikes?
Yes, thank you. It is very difficult to describe sound in objective terms. Most of these phrases are cliches because people find them useful. "Plays like butter" may not have a specific meaning you can look up in the dictionary, but it does give you an idea of what the speaker is trying to say.
