I apologize for all the other guys at UPS. I shudder every time I see a thread about a guitar getting damaged. I was nervous last month when I shipped two Taylor guitars via UPS. I took the first guitar in to the UPS center where I work so I could ship it to Ryan Simper who had bought it. Carol (the customer counter lady at UPS) said she would pack it. I said, "No you won't. I will be packing this one." It arrived safely and I gave a huge sigh of relief. I hope every is fine J.R.

I can think of a purple-and-orange one....

Seriously, if you're shipping an expensive guitar, consider using express (air) shipment, because the less time the guitar spends in transit, the fewer chances there are for damage. Of course, overnight isn't cheap, but 2-day service can be a good compromise.

Yep. And that's how I shipped it. They still broke it.

UPS broke two of my amplifiers in succession. The original Fender Twin Reverb that my wife bought me for Christmas, when I opened the box on Christmas eve, was destroyed beyond repair. It had been dropped so hard that the frame was busted. It had a trapazoidal shape to it. Went through all the hassle of sending it back, dealing with UPS over the claim and all, received the replacement unit and it too was damaged. I finally had a third amp sent Federal Express and it arrived without a scratch.

I'm sure there are some good, conscientious UPS employees but my experience with UPS, and I deal with them nearly every day, is that their over-all service is very poor. It's a standing joke with nearly anyone you talk to. If you want your freight busted, lost or stolen call UPS.

Terrible-there should be some way to get compensated for the angst and anguish they've put you through. I know there's no way you can be made whole for the loss of the guitar, assuming it's a total loss.

Used to work at a hospital supply depot, where they're constantly shipping delicate instruments, etc.

They called UPS "Gorilla Freight". No kidding, that was their name for it.

Well, the guitar arrived back, and Taylor did fix it. Unfortunately, you can see where they fixed it. While they did a nice job on the fix, it still looks like the neck pocket was crushed and repaired. If you look at where the neck meets the body, just below the high-E string next to the cutaway, the redwood top was crushed from the top of the body of the guitar all the way down to the end of the fretboard.

JR, try and post some pics so we can get a better idea of what happened.

Do you HAVE to accept the repair as made?

Does UPS owe you anything more since the repaired guitar is not as good as it was before?

No, I don't have to accept it. Taylor wanted me to look at it and see if it's acceptable, because as you know, this guitar is pretty much a one-of-a-kind. While the fix is good, it's kind of like owning a Les Paul with the famous "repaired headstock" crack. From my standpoint, UPS should take full responsibility for what they did to my guitar, and pay for it. But how do you put a price tag on this custom guitar? I'll just have to talk to Taylor and see if it would be possible to get another one built... Then stick UPS with the bill.
