Wasn't trying to argue with you, was just referring to Martin website specs. My OMC-18E spec on the website doesn't specify forward-shifting. But, I guess OMs are definitely different than 000s.

Been down the all hog road once or twice. Spruce topped guitars will always be more versatile but that's my humble opinion!

I did find that the 17 was a "dryer" overall tone, the 000-18 tone more complex and more sustain. Since I had "discovered" the 000-18 and knew that was the guitar tone I wanted from an instrument, I decided to save a little longer and get the 000-18. I saw no reason to have any doubts what so ever about my decision, it's way more expensive to buy the wrong thing, sell it off then get what you wanted in the first place. Good Hunting.
This...

Get the 000-18. The 000-17 is VERY DRY. I had one and loved it, but I could have gone for a bit more highs and low end.

This must be a common misconception...the 000-17 is Spruce topped.

I would agree with this statement. For me, with the totally screwed up hearing (no thanks to the Army and Sheriff's Dept.), I really appreciate the "dryness" of the 17 because that equals individual note clarity/definition...again, may just be my hearing or lack there of.

In the light of your precious suggestions, I bought a 000-18. I will give you a review in the moment it is home. Thank you for helping, I learned a lot, and I see here many really experienced on the thread. But please keep on giving wonderful infos about Martin guitars.

Congratulations! Now that you're all set with that big, lush Martin sound, if you're like most of us here, you'll soon want to add more colors to your pallette with something like my 000-17SM because it has that warm, wonderfully dry, focused tone

A little late, but… congratulations!

I LOVE my 00017. It’s by far my favorite guitar. However, if I could have only one guitar, I don’t think it could be the one. It’s my favorite, because it gets to stand in a room full of amazing friends, and it has something truly special that gets me.

At the moment, I’m struggling over whether to buy a used, well priced D28. Somehow I stumbled into this thread! I think it’s because I believe the D18 is might be what I’m really looking for.

I am old and my experience of buying anything that I treasure like guitars, cars and bikes is that if you are torn between something you really like and something that is almost as nice but costs less, it is worth it to pay extra for the thing you really like. After it is paid for you will be glad and forget about the fact that it cost a little bit more (I do not know your wife). I do not have a 000-17, but I do have an HD-28 and D-18, and believe that the Martin standards are great guitars and that you would not be disappointed.

Congrats. I have a 000-18 as well. Its a great couch guitar. Mine is over 2 years old now and has settled in beautifully. Really great player as well. I hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
