$2,000 is plenty of money to find something nice. Last two times I spent under 2k I ended up with:
-A new Taylor 314ce -A used Huss and Dalton 00-SP I'm very pleased with both of them. Best of luck to you.

I get a kick out of seeing a 'newbie' appear on a forum and ask such a question (with no details other than $) and how many people answer seriously with a suggestion. Kudos to those who ask qualifying questions.

For two grand you can get pretty much any style and any quality, though for that kind of cash you will get a good guitar from any trustworthy dealer or manufacturer.
If you want a top brand, they have lots of choices. If you want something more durable you should look to carbon fiber guitars. There are also a plethora of boutique makers out there in that price range. There's also a lot of love/hate opinions between different manufacturers and different materials. Ignore that as they are all guitars and they all have a guitar sound. Go for what most interests you. I am sure you have already got a basket load of PMs where someone has your perfect guitar and is ready to send it to you. I would avoid those 'great' deals for now. If you give more details about your guitar interests then you'll get a hundred more replies and probably as many or more PMs where everybody is trying to get you to buy their dream guitar and make it your dream now. In other words, buyer beware! |

Well if you are hell bent on buying a mainstream brand name guitar for $2000 the obvious go-to choices would be
Flat-pickinging: Martin D-18 Singer-Songwriter: Gibson J-45 Contemporary all-around easy player: Taylor 414ce Note NEW street price on all these models are over $2k but can be easily negotiated down to right at $2k or a little below. The dealers have the headroom and there's enough on-line competition you can get a good deal. Now if you don't mind giving up the lifetime warranty and can get a return policy/have the ability to inspect the instrument before purchase, I suggest looking at the preowned market.

This. I think the ones throwing out specific models, and not asking things like "What kind of music do you like to play?" are the real newbies.

You can play all styles on all guitars but of course, some are better than others.

OP, lots of people will ask you what kind of music do you play, are you going to perform onstage, with a group or solo, will you need a pickup, etc... They'll tell you that you need to consider all of that and then go out and try as many as you can get your hands on to see how they feel and sound to your hands and ears before deciding which guitar is right for you. So do all that, then buy a Gibson Advanced Jumbo. |

The job is to learn a language called music. Some dude has $2k and floats an inquiry. Some ask for his profile, some put it out there and some snark. f-d
