Default NJ35D - 38 burst...

I've been looking at this guitar for a long time...

It has several "uncleated and sealed stable" cracks. Here's what the
"bolt cracks" look like on the inside...

There's probably enough tone bars in there to hold the whole
thing together by themselves! Anyhow, it plays and sounds great.
Tapping on the top produces nice sounds that sustain. It seems
pretty stable to me...

I measured some stuff on it...

There's a little bit of relief. A two-foot long straight edge set
on the frets bumps into the saddle a tiny bit instead of sitting
flat on the bridge, but there's plenty of saddle.

It has the expected fairly sharp 30's Gibson v-neck... real big
near the nut.

This is the same guitar I was looking at six or eight months
ago. I put my 57 D-28 up for sale with the intention of getting
this one. While taking close-up pictures of my for-sale D-28, I realized
there was a crack in the bridge, so I posted to my for-sale thread
and carried my D-28 to Mike Weems for a new bridge (and neck reset
maybe). In the meantime my "guitar savings account" filled in
enough to obviate the need to sell the D-28, and the J-35 was
still there... now it is here.

One day, when Mike Weems texts me that the the D-28 is ready
I'll bring this one along to show him.

Very cool - I think I would go ahead and have the top cracks glued and cleated. While they are at that, they can check all your braces and make sure nothing is loose. When I started the work on a 1963 LG-0 that had been left in non humidity control closet for nearly 40 years, it had top cracks and 7 spots where braces had to be re-glued. In addition there were a couple of places where the top and back were separating from the sides. This LG-0 also had the plastic bridge that was bolted to the top. The top cracks did not run from these bolts though.

The cracks seem to be glued but not cleated. I will take it for a look when the
fellow who has my D-28 calls me to come get it...

This has turned out to be a dynomite guitar, in some ways because
of (not in spite of ) the giant V neck. Man I like playing it. But not
tuning it.

"I hate the tuners that came on my IRIS I'm going to replace them with
well used 80 year old bottom of the line Gibson tuners!", said no one ever.

Golden Age tuners match up perfectly, so I ordered a set. But the bushings
don't interchange, and the Golden Age ones will require reaming the
post holes. It's either that or use the unpleasant old tuners. What could go
wrong? Off to Harbor Freight for a T-handled reamer...

I went slow. It took a long time. Nothing went wrong. ...

I reamed on this old Alvarez a bit before I started in on the 38 J-35...
