Morels
I found a couple morels when walking the dog today. Any dedicated mushroom hunters out there?

I'm happy to sauté them in garlic butter with a little salt and pepper, but I've never been good at finding them.

I seem to remember a recent story about someone who died from eating raw morels. As I recall, they have to be cooked before eating them...

You had me there for a second. I thought you were talking about these:

Interestingly enough, I just saw some packaged morels at Publix. They were rather small though compared to the ones I used to find in Ohio. There are few things tastier than morels lightly coated in flour and fried until golden brown in butter.
Sadly it’s way too hot in Florida for them.

I’m a novice, but have been gathering mushrooms for years, and consider it a very good day to find (any) Morels.

Ticks and bigfoot hang out in the woods.
I own 30 acres of woods and never cared about the fungi's but do have a theory about ticks and bigfoot. They can both appear and disappear at will. |

I used to fill several grocery bags in northern Michigan- first black morels in early May, then white ones. They used to be easy to find around ash trees. But since the ash trees have all died, I dont know where to look. Some say aspen trees, others ironwood. But now I seem to find them randomly and in small number

There's an ash tree in our woods. I think about how "morels grow
under ash trees" whenever I walk by and notice the ash tree. This thread induced me to go look, there's no morels there today... -Mike |

I haven't seen them in Phoenix but something really interesting happens here in the desert. I mulch heavily around my trees to keep moisture in the soil and have found amazing oyster mushrooms growing under my trees. Crazy for it to be 115F outside and have a delicate oyster mushroom growing in the mulch. Delicious too.

My son is a forager, and lucky for me he actually doesn't like morrels so he gets them and gives them to me. My wife soaks them and then does the coating mix and fries. I just eats......

We've been on our property in the mountains of East TN for 9 years, and only found morels last year. Had a little harvest this year, enough for steak and shrooms and fresh asparagus, all raised here. Yum.
