Default Interested to know re: Martin Guitars

Hi all,
When did Martin switch from tortoiseshell pick guards to the black pick guards on the D-28 and other Martin guitars? Was this done at the same time as the switch from Brazilian rosewood to Indian rosewood (on the 28 style) or was in done independently? I know by 1972 pick guards were black and in 1967 pick guards were tortoise shell but I'm wondering if there is a date and/or guitar serial number when this change specifically happened?
Thanks,
Bob M.

According the Martin Guitars: A History by Mike Longworth, it was 1966 after #217215. East Indian Rosewood was introduced in 1969 #254498

All I know is my 2011 M-36 has tortoiseshell, and my 2016 GPC-35E is black.

So my guitars are cased when not being played.

I read the OP's question, and you know?

I have to look to see.

I'm generally not looking at the front, unless I'm changing strings and cleaning.

Usually I prefer no pickguard at all.

My OM-28 and my GPCPA1 both have tortoise shell.

Default Martin pickguard color...

My 1966 000-28 (208xxx) has a tortoise shell pickguard, before the serial number you indicated. I did see a D-28 from 1967 less than a week ago and it had a tortoise shell pickguard. Of course, this guitar may have had a pickguard repair replacement or it might have been specially ordered like that. I wasn't able to get any additional information on that.

JP2558, pickguard materials since the 60s have improved alot in areas of warpage and shrinkage and also safety. With these new materials being used, it's very possible Martin used faux tortoise shell pick guards on your guitar made in 2011. Here, I'm mainly interested in finding out about Martin guitars from the 1960s and when they switched over from tortoise shell to using the black pick guards. Mike Longworth seems a very credible source and thanks (WBW) for researching the serial numbers from his book.

Thanks for your comments,
Bob M.
