Another thread about new guitar break-in
I know it's been covered, but I'd rather not sift through the search engine if y'all don't mind.
I bought a couple of new guitars recently. I guess I do believe there's something to the notion that a new guitar is going to change some of its characteristics after it's been played for a certain amount of time, but in my case I think I hear something happening at the 2-3 hour point for the second time in a row. Am I just nuts? Is the guitar changing or is it more that my ear is just attuning itself to the nuances of the guitar? I never noticed it with my Gibson Hummingbird, though I don't play it often. I bought a sub-$500 Tanglewood lammy over the summer and for the first time I could swear I noticed an expansion in the sound after about 2 hours of constant playing. And just yesterday I brought home a Martin HD-16R (Adirondack top) and I just finished a 2-3 hour session with it, and it seems again like something's widened or become more dynamic or expressive or whatever words apply. Agree? Disagree? Any comments? It's surprising whatever it is. Certainly something's going on here. |

Maybe after a couple hours, your body heat warms up the guitar letting the wood flex better. Does it go away after you wait a day?

Your fingers heated up ? About a week ago, I was playing finger style like I was superman, it sounded like heaven. Haven't been able to reproduce it, until the next time,

I don't know, with that short of a time maybe it's mostly you getting used to the guitar and learning what pulls the best (or most varied) sounds out if it.
I will say there is certainly a "warm-up" period, but I think that's more for the benefit of the player than the guitar. |

if your ears bleed, you are either playing badly or maybe Malmsteen's protege

Guitars are like screen-doors...you have to bang them a bunch to get them to loosen up.
Bang away. I have two brand-new just-built guitars here that will change mightily over the next week or two. Since I only have two hands (and a bad shoulder, to boot) I'll be using a PrimeVibe with one or the other guitar at *all* times. Goodness will come.
