Default Taylors for troops

Alright folks,

I'm hoping some of you shop owner types (and maybe even Uncle Bob) will read this.

After Killer58's post, and given the fact that my sister's husband is a guitar player "over their" as well - I thought I'd see if there might be an interest in raising some cash to send some Baby Taylors to our guys stationed around Iraq. I figure we'd send them to forum members and family members of forum members first.

I don't know how to facilitate doing this sort of thing - but I'd certainly help if I can. If we all kicked in $10 - $50 I'm sure we'd get a nice number of guitars we could send over.

Any thoughts? Is this a possibility?

killer mentioned the temp at 120 degrees and the humidity at about 10 percent....seems like guitars might melt (or bake!)

Its a very thoughtful idea!

Great idea. I'm in.

Maybe Dampit would throw in some humidifiers for a little extreme environmental testing...

Well, that may be, but the last thing you'd want to be holding in that heat is an aluminum guitar...!

couldn't pass this one up without replying. i think it's a fabulous idea and, with some experience in the "field", one that would be well appreciated. with over 30 years of army(now retired) under my belt, i can tell you that i've taken a guitar with me nearly all oveer the world. i've even gone so far as to purchase a plywood epiphone to go to the mohave desert, thinking i'd be leaving nothing but splinters, but it faired well under the heat and i still have it. it was there when we were into "clamshells" during a few sand storms and took up the hours while we waited for the dust to settle.
this idea is not new. there was a time(ww1) that gibson made instruments for soldiers going "over there". the instrument of choice back then was the mandolin and so became the army-navy model. but it's sole purpose was for entertainment of troops.
martin is making a model that salutes the services, but it's not the kind of guitar that would ever make it for this purpose.
let's not knock the idea of a plywood instrument....especially for the idea of playing in less than ideal conditions. a good ply with proper bracing and a finish that would take the elements(sand is a killer...i know) and i'm sure that something might be made at a reasonable cost.
keep us in the loop if this idea grows wings

I'll start off by donating my Baby Taylor (2002 301) complete with gig bag... as long as someone sets up the mechanism to do so, so it gets where it's supposed to go.

Let me know.
