Default What Gibson jumbo size is this?

See here:

I own one of these Nova 390 Epiphones and love it, and would like to know which Gibson equivalent sized jumbo it is nearest to... Since I'm thinking of getting one.

The oval shaped soundhole is tricking my eyes, can't say if it's the J-185 or (S)J-200 size ... definitely bigger than the J-165, right?

here's another picture:

I think the Nova series had an AJ body. I wouldn't bet the house on it, but I believe that's what it was.

Can't you just measure the width of the lower bout?

Glad ya didn't bet your house lol - Here's an AJ:

The guitar in question has the shape of the Gibson jumbos - J-100, 165, 185, 200 but without knowing the size it's hard to say what it's closest to. The 165 is the size of a soup spoon, whereas the 200 is the size of an aircraft carrier - well, a little stretch there, but you get the picture. But, like HHP sez, measure it!

Mark, you are correct, but back in the 70's, Norlin (God forbid)owned Gibson at the time and most Epi guitars were being made in Japan. Nova made some of this series based on the AJ, but different bracings and overall shape . That's what I was thinking of. My mistake. I read that at times this model series was all-over-the-place. Of course, that's what I read on the internet a few years ago, so how accurate it is I wouldn't bet the house on either...lol....Any idea if these guitars are still made by someone?

Thank you MissouriPicker for completely ruining Father's Day by mentioning Norlin As far as I know the Nova 390 is not in production any more (though i might be wrong), at least I can't find it at either the Gibson site or the Epi site. Except for the Masterbilts, most Epi acoustics are inexpensive (but high quality) copies of Gibsons -

This looks like a J-185 size to me. Measure the lower bout. If it's 16" it's J-185 which is considered "small" jumbo. 17" would be J-200 but it doesn't look that big to me.

The upper bout would be larger in proportion to the lower bout if it was made in the same body molds as the J-200. It looks much more like the shape of the J-185 to me as well.

So, original poster, you can know more if you measure it. If it's 16 inches across the lower bout, you'd be looking at getting a J-185.

Hope this helps.

thanks Guys, i'll measure tonight and report!

By the way, it's a great guitar, unbraced (Taylor 200 series style) laminate rosewood back. Big volume.

I've raised the bridge and have it tuned permanently in open tunings for slide, the best slide sound of all my acoustics!

That doesn't look like a J-200 or a J-185 body shape to my eyes, although it's probably closer to a J-185. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a tweener that doesn't perfectly correspond to any Gibson body shape. They made a lot of design choices with that guitar that deviate from the Gibson norms.

Here's the OP guitar and a 185 from the Gibby website -

Other than the soundhole shape, I don't see a difference. What's at issue is whether the Epi is as large as the 185 or small like the 165 - -
