It's just a personal thing. Collings sound great and I admire their build quality, but a top-notch Santa Cruz has a "voice" that feels almost human to me, like a great singer. When I play one that has that "vocal" quality, I'm moved in a way that so far no Collings has come close to.
My favorite SCs are very often 100% stock, no fancy wood upgrades. They're often the least expensive models, too. I'm really impressed with what comes out of that shop.
