This would have been good in new thread, as I have done a lot of messing with conversions to lap steel, both acoustic and electric. I use both home-made nut raisers and conversion capos, and also home-made floating capos.
I also play mostly folk and country blues, in open D or E, depending on scale length and string gauge.
To answer the OP's question, you can use a wider nut spacing on the nut raiser.
