Why should you stay away from a dread for fingerstyle?
For some people that might be true. You never know till you play some guitars.
Gibsons traditionally have narrow fingerboards and generally considered a poor choice for fingerstyle. Seagulls tend to have wide fingerboards, considered better for finger style.

Thing is, what do YOUR fingers like for finger style?

I'm not knocking your friend's opinion.
But as guitar players we tend to make generalizations.
A lot of people move to a smaller body size, not because it sounds better. Not even because it fits their style of play.
A lot go from a dread to a 00 because it's easier on the shoulder to reach over a smaller guitar.

So, find the style guitar that your body is comfortable playing
Then, find the best sounding one in your price range.
Buy it! Learn it! Give anyone that denigrates it a knowing "Mona Lisa Smile" and keep playing.
