To the OP:
There's no way you can buy a new decent-sounding hand built guitar new for $500.
The only instance you will find something like this is someone doesn't know what he/she has and does not know how to use Google. Then you would be ripping the person off.
The cheapest hand built guitar I've seen is going for $1k, and it's a shotty build. Granted, I couldn't do any better as a woodworker, so I'm not judging the poor guy, but he won't be getting any of my money.
