Who can show us what Colin Hay is doing in this tune?
His take on Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" is really nice. See it here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB65PKfcW0g&loop=0 I can play it, the chord progressions and the hammer-ons, up until the short solo break part, but cannot see what he is doing up in the upper reaches of the fretboard. I am playing it on my Yamaha LS-TA, the transacoustic ON, set with reverb at about 3/4, and chorus at 1/2. Sounds terrific. But I need to learn the solo. For us lowly non-pros who struggle, are any of you willing to do a quick tutorial, via video, or alternately, write out what do do? |
Very nicely sung and played but it seems he doesn't really want you to see his playing.
Basic progression available here : https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab...chords-1193052 I find that lead break melody lines usually occur within the chord progressions. Hope that helps. |
Thanks, Mr M, but he's not being secretive. Watch his excellent how-to for "Overdrive." I wish he'd done one for this.

I watched to hear what he was doing. Around 2:15 in the video he simply goes up the neck and uses a couple of alternate chord forms with a few melody notes thrown in.

I'm stuggling. Need more info.

Found the TAB via Reddit, paid $5.75 for the .pdf, and I am all set.
Was the TAB guy, "Transcriber Joe," one of y'all? It is precisely as Colin Hay plays it. |
Here's a great in depth video for this song but on electric.
