NGD Atkin J45 'the 43' English-made classic.

Here's a new Christmas addition to my small collection. I wanted a short scale J45 to complement my two Martin 12 fretters but for various reasons didn't want a Gibbo. I was looking at the Kopp dreads as one of the UK posters has recently imported one and likes his. Then my brother who owns an Atkin jumbo told me that Alister was making a copy of a '43 J45. I got in touch with Alister last week and he had just finished one and now here it is in my sticky little hands! This is his take of a 1940's 'banner' J45. Just about everything is period correct, though the sitka spruce top is torrified. Mahogany back and sides which are really dark almost black and look superb. Firestripe pickguard and three in line klusons. He has a couple more on his website www.atkinguitars.com He has made several of these for the Buddy Holly foundation in Texas. A fine guitar from one of our finest guitar makers. :)

Well done mate thats a very nice guitar! If it were not for the narrow ish nut i would own one of these also (nearly bought one a few times but ended up with one of the rare 50 made Gibson banner reissues). I aim to speak to Alister regarding a custom build (J-45 or Smeck) with a fat neck next year. One of the best makers anywhere and the only maker who can 'relic' acoustic guitars that appeal to me. Great stuff would love to see more pics/sound clips etc etc. GAS bubbling... Gotta love this as well:

Wow, Mick,

That is a great looking J-45-type guitar! Congratulations! Lovely sunburst!

Yo Bob,
Yes the Martin relics look superb also. They have just had a good review in the quarterly 'Acoustic' mag..... the one that is the spin off of 'Guitarist'.

What a lovely interpretation of the Gibson J-45! I'd love to hear what it sounds like.

Enjoy!

Really nice guitar. I checked them out, but as a previous poster said. just the nut width. Wee bit narrow for a clumsy bugger like me. I went for the Kopp K35. Enjoy yours mate.

Necks

Hi chaps. We can make wider necks if you want them. What size were u thinking?

Andy Howell 12-31-2015 03:30 AM

I've played a few of the Atkins slope shouldered guitars and I think they have cracked the sound. New Gibsons are very inconsistent I find and I find it difficult to find a neck that I like with the sound I like. I'd definitely go down the Atkins route! Great Guitars.

Whoa!

That's gorgeous!

Congratulations.

I’ve just got one of these.

It’s truly fantastic. I was torn between this and his Essential D Model but this edged it out. It’s really comfortable to play as well. I’m used to a wider nut but this has been easy to adapt to.
