New Gibson…neck overset. Concern or should I just shut up and play the dang thing.

Got a used 2023 50’s reissue LG2 off Reverb. The action is good at .090 E and .070 e. Saddle is very tall IMO. It’s right at 1/4” above bridge and break angle seems high. I read a lot of old threads today but thought I’d post one on my specific case. String height above top is about 7/16”. It plays very well I guess I’m just concerned with stress on the bridge. I’d feel better if it had the belly up bridge.

Personally, I’d leave it alone for now and just watch and see what it does. Intervene only if needed.

Hope that makes sense.

What Wade said.

Thanks. I’m inclined to agree. I just took a break to play it and it really does play well.

Is it your photo or does the saddle look crooked and leaning over with a gap?

Get it to a good luthier for a good setup and a check up. The Gibson leaning saddle in a too big a slot seems a bit common lately. Get a fatter saddle!

It looks fine to me, just play that thing. Ok a setup would probably make you like it even more. I know that a setup on my 50’s reissue LG-2 took a really good guitar and made it a great guitar. The tech that did the setup is a guy I’ve known for quite a while and he wanted the guitar when he was done. Nope, I’m a keeping this one.

Agreed. There appears to be a slight gap and slight lean as a result. If it were mine, I’d make a new saddle to fit the saddle perfectly, and see if I can’t find action I liked with the saddle a hair shorter than the current saddle. But even if the saddle stays the same height, I’d just watch it for now.

There is a very slight gap I think. I kinda hate to mess with the saddle because the intonation is so good. I’ll measure the saddle though and get an appropriate one from Macnichol’s.

Looks totally fine to me. Play it and enjoy it.

Before fitting a tighter saddle, is the guitar reasonably humidified? If by chance its on the dry side, that can account for a small gap. Frankly, if it plays well, is intonated, and stays in tune…..well, you know….if it aint broke…

Yes I will let it acclimate before making any adjustments. I’m fortunate to have a dehumidifier that keeps my room between 45-60%

I’d let it settle a few days before doing anything. I would play it and enjoy it. Overset necks are really only a problem if they present a playing problem. Take it to a tech to have the saddle checked if you’re still worried. But I wouldn’t be inclined to worry.

Of course, I half considered keeping a used 12 string I bought today after the bridge came off while playing it for about 30 minutes, so take my advice with a grain of salt. [emoji23]

I agree! It looks perfect.

Myopic Squirrel 04-24-2024 08:49 PM

Enlarged both pictures trying to see the gap. Would someone please point out where it’s located for these old eyes? Thank you in advance!

Sorry to hear about the 12 string. That would be a real buzz kill. No pun intended.
