Which acoustic electric guitar for fingerstyle?
The maximum amount I'm willing to spend is $450. I'm planning on playing things like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Oz5R6Rw2TY
A lot of people are telling me to get a guitar that has at least 1 3/4'' nut width for fingerstyle, but those are rather hard to find in my country so I'm thinking of ordering online. |
Well, in the video Eddie Van der Meer is playing an amazing Greenfield so you will have a bit of a hard time finding that precise sound. Just try a bunch of guitars in that $450 price range and see what catches your ear....that is the most important thing.

You want an acoustic guitar with electronics. Right?
What county are you in? Here's some search results from a big German store: http://www.thomann.de/gb/folk_guitar...ture-9458=true maybe... http://www.thomann.de/gb/yamaha_ls_6...nt_b_stock.htm Agreed that trying some guitars for yourself is a great idea, if at all possible. Bring a friend too, so you can listen to each other playing. |

It is not a Dred. Thomann classifies it as a "Folk Guitar".
Anyway, that is a big webstore in Europe. You can make your own searches if the store is suitable for you. Their steel string guitar categories start here: http://www.thomann.de/gb/steel_strin...c_guitars.html Inside the category, you can filter results by selecting price range, nut width etc. Some play fingerstyle using dreds too, but many feel it is not a comfortable shape. They are probably usually with narrower fingerboards, too. Edit: here's results from their "Misc Western Guitars" category: http://www.thomann.de/gb/misc_wester...ture-9448=true A couple of Takamines caught my eye there. |
Why should you stay away from a dread for fingerstyle?
For some people that might be true. You never know till you play some guitars. Gibsons traditionally have narrow fingerboards and generally considered a poor choice for fingerstyle. Seagulls tend to have wide fingerboards, considered better for finger style. Thing is, what do YOUR fingers like for finger style? I'm not knocking your friend's opinion. But as guitar players we tend to make generalizations. A lot of people move to a smaller body size, not because it sounds better. Not even because it fits their style of play. A lot go from a dread to a 00 because it's easier on the shoulder to reach over a smaller guitar. So, find the style guitar that your body is comfortable playing Then, find the best sounding one in your price range. Buy it! Learn it! Give anyone that denigrates it a knowing "Mona Lisa Smile" and keep playing. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
I think I'll go with a Baton Rouge AR21C/GACE, I love the sound of it :)
