Who in the UK would you go to for a neck reset?
Title pretty much sums up what I'm asking.
Would be grateful if UK members could recommend a shop or luthier for some vintage work in the not-too-distant future. Please provide a rough price quote or estimate where you can. I know the going rate seems to be £250-£300 but given the age of the guitar I'd rather pay towards the top end of the scale for an experienced professional. Thanks in advance :) |
Where are you in the uk? I use these guys for all my guitar work:

The only Martin authorised repair centre in the UK. That's got to tell you something. |
Thanks for the responses and sorry, I should have said where I'm based!
Thank you for the suggestions Paul and Andrew, but Birkenhead and Devon are both a fair journey from London :) I've heard of Brook guitars, though. I had not thought of Dave King, bobster. Good call. I will more than likely go to him, and I will bump this thread with the result of the neck reset in due course (may not be for some time, but it's on the cards). |
Let us know how you get on. Dave makes some incredible instruments as well just be careful or you may come back with one of these like me :) http://www.daveking-acoustics.co.uk/guitar_model/l-00/

Dave King used to write regular repair tutorials, in the manner of Frank Ford, in one of the UK guitar mags, if I remember correctly, many moons ago. Knows his stuff.

There's a French chap at Sheehans in Leciester called Cedric, he replaced Pierre who I was told was poached by Lowden! Pierre used to do my Lowden and it was always excellent work, I sent it to Cedric this year for a pick up and set up, not knowing if he'd be as good as Pierre, I no need to worry, the guitar came back and it was a revelation, I had to ring him and tell him how good the job was, the guitar felt unbelievable, he's now the only man I trust with such things! Highly recommend Cedric.

I'am in London you could try looking on Ivor Morraints website. They sell
top end stuff. There luthier there could be worth a call.Theres info on him on the site. The shops just of Oxford ST.(by the way big Neil fan too) Hope this helps. |
David Antony Reid out in Battersea would be my first choice, beautiful work and a great guy.
|
I've had David Reid in Battersea (though I think he's relocating to Scotland...) and Jim Fleeting in Ripon work on my guitars - both have done splendid work!
I don't know how much David would charge for a neck reset, but Jim quotes "from £175". Cheers, David |
When I lived in the 'smoke' Charlie Chandler at Guitar Experience at Hampton used to do fine work on my guitars. They're just the other side of Kingston Bridge if you're in West London/Surrey area. Railway station across the road.
Highly recommended. They also have a plek machine which can't be bad set up wise.:) |
