!!! HELP !!! New strings buzzing

Recently I bought Ernie Ball Super Slinky .09 strings and I suppose they are smaller gauge than my previous strings. After I put them on, it started buzzing a lot on bass strings and a little on treble strings on almost every frett and open. WHAT SHOULD I DO???

There'll be a lot of well informed advice on this I'm sure, but based on my experience I'd say that the strings of a different gauge are exerting a different amount of force on the neck changing the curvature. I would try looking at the curvature of the neck and adjusting the truss rod.

the lighter gauge strings result in less tension on the neck, therefore the action is now lower than what you had it last.

Just use the truss rod and lower the action. Only do it a quarter turn at a time...let the neck reacclimate for about 30 to 60 minutes each turn.

If at any point the truss rod is hard to adjust...STOP...take it to a professional setup guy

The string gauge is probably vastly different than what the guitar is set up for. They sit lower in the nut and are buzzing on the frets. You can go to a light string (.11-) or have a new nut made if that gauge is what you need for some specific reason or have the neck relief adjusted and see if that relief is playable like you want. What did you switch from? Lights or mediums?

I've never heard of anybody putting 09 gauge on an acoustic guitar.

I've never heard of 09 Gauge period!!
Must be extra-extra lights!!

You are playing .09s on an acoustic?

paulp1960 01-03-2016 03:49 PM

I think the OP has put electric strings on his acoustic guitar.

As to you question "What should I do?". Replace them with another set of your old gauge!! Do not pass go!!! Period!!!

Sorry, I f***** up, my strings are .11

Now that we're starting over ;) ......... what did you have on previously? However, it doesn't really matter. The string change effected the buzzing. Get your wrench out and give the truss-rod a 1/4 turn 9 (ish) and it should stop.

Whatever you do don't do this. Get some acoustic strings and put on and junk the electric strings you put on there

No. He said he installed .11's - Ernie Ball Super Slinky's - I assume acoustic. He should have already (long ago) checked to make sure they were not electric strings.

I also advise against adjusting the truss rod until you have a better idea whats going on. That's a last ditch effort to adjust the string height ... that is only for setting a bit of relief once everything else is correct. Hard to judge without a hands on look.

Standard acoustic sets would range:

.012 - 052 / 053 depending on brand
or
.013 - .053 / .054 ..

Also if you have had all the strings off for any length of time ... it might take a while (1 day) to settle back. Also are you sure that you are tuned back up to concert pitch ?
